Your destination still seems like an even farther off dream with as slowly as the wagons go, but at least you have good company... Right? You're traveling through Missouri this week, and it seems like it will be a quiet trip. WEATHER Sunday: Hot Monday: Pleasant Tuesday: Pleasant Wednesday: Pleasant Thursday: Rain Friday: Rain Saturday: Fog This week, suggested activities include Hunting, Wagon Maintenance, and Cooking. On Tuesday, there will also be a chance to ford the Blue River. The river is shallow, and conditions are good. [It's super hot and Kuranosuke wants to complain, but he is The Lone Delicate Flower of Wagon 3, so he guesses he can try and be on his best behavior. How long his resolve will last is anyone's guess, but pretending should make this at least a little more interesting, he hopes.

So instead of a "GOD, it's hot!" his wagonmates will be treated to a demure-sounding,]

Excuse me... it's so hot out. Could I trouble one of you for some water?

[Iiiit's cooking time! Let it be known that Kuranosuke has absolutely no idea how to cook on the trail like this. Books and movies always made it sound so simple, though, so he's gathering sticks and stuff to try and build a cooking fire with. He doesn't actually know what he's doing, but he looks cheery enough at just the thought of a meal.]

It's almost chow time, everyone! Soon we'll be able to dig in!

[Assuming anyone actually knows how to cook because haha... ha...]

Tuesday
[Well that. Sure is a river. They're all going to have to figure out how to get their wagons across somehow, but that's not his call to make. Before they even think about that, he's got another suggestion.]

Hey! Why don't we all take advantage of this nice weather and go swimming for a little bit first?

[These are the collectively ridiculous people he's supposed to lead, huh... A week later, Canute still has those moments where he just stares judgmentally from his designated spot in the wagon, but sometimes - sometimes - he's somewhat less Serious all the time.

This is one of those times. He heard manners! So after pausing with whatever he's doing- trying to coax oxen into moving, likely- he reaches over to pluck a canteen out of a supply pile and holds it out.]

Keep it with you.

[It's like positive reinforcement... use manners, get water!

Kuranosuke looks so incredibly happy to see that canteen that he doesn't even seem to care that it's a canteen instead of something normal like a water bottle or a glass. He takes it and unscrews the cap, happy as a clam.]

Thanks! [And then, chuckling -] You've got a soft side to you after all, huh, Fearless Leader?

[That is definitely what it is... it's working.

Canute is about to turn back to his grueling task, but ah, Kuranosuke isn't done with him yet- he should have known. He tilts his head, feeling a little awkward; "soft side" isn't very leadership-worthy.]

I— [jeez] Keeping all of you healthy is not "soft."

[Unfortunately Kuranosuke's manners only last so long now that he has his water...]

Ohh? Are you sure you didn't help me out because you were being asked by a cute girl?

[he's not even a girl...]

[Don't make him take that canteen back... he will. Especially if comments like that continue, wow, he isn't like that-!!]

Such a grouch...

[Kuranosuke pouts, but he sits back and drinks the water nonetheless. Canute will actually have a few minutes of reprieve before he makes a nuisance of himself again!]

Hey, Canoodles. [That's his nickname now, apparently.] Where'd you learn to do all this? The whole... Wagon-leader, smelly-animal-handler thing.

[He's going to enjoy those few minutes of trying to reason with the ox, again. Then, there's a question in there somewhere, but all he hears is-]

My name is Canute!

That's what I said, isn't it?

Absolutely not. [IMMEDIATELY WAVING HIS HAND. He's wandered away from his own wagon since he also won't be of much help actually fording the river, and he's standing with his hand on his hip, surveying the water with a disdainful expression.]

Who knows what sort of filth is in here? Or we'd be stripped to the bone by piranhas.

I thought piranhas were just in, like, the Amazon or something.

[And really campy movies... Mega Piranha. If you haven't watched it, you need to, because it's a thing of beauty.]

The water looks clean enough. Look, it's nice and blue!

You do know that diseases don't exactly show up as neon-colored patches in the water, yes? It could very well look clean, but a dead ox may be just around the riverbend.

As long as we fish it out to eat it, it'll be fine!

[But if it's going to kill the ox it would probably kill them too...]

Bad water's supposed to look murky and gross and have scum floating around, anyway. So this is okay. I bet we could even drink it! Are you thirsty?

Don't just eat a dead ox! [GOD KURANOSUKE.] It obviously died from something.

[And then iT JUST KEEPS GOING FORWARD AT THE SPEED OF LIGHT and Charles is left pinching his nose like a Very Irritated Person and scowling.]

No! No, I am not thirsty, and I'm certainly not thirsty for water that flows downstream. You're absolutely going to die first if you're this reckless, you know? [IF HE ONLY... KNEW]

Here, let me help with that.

[Arthur's at least in a decent mood. The weather's been nice, and while the trip is long and slow, Arthur's used to that. It helps to be on Large Quests in a medieval canon himself.

Which is why he's happy to crouch by Kuranosuke and that attempted fire, to help rearrange the wood. It'd be 100% easier with his magic, but he still knows how to build a campfire, at least.]

[Kuranosuke shoots Arthur a smile and gladly lets him help figure out how to start the fire, because yeah, this whole "roughing it" thing really isn't part of his skill set. It's a good thing he's not a Fire Emblem character because he'd pass on some really crappy stats.]

You know how to do a lot of really useful things, huh.

[It's okay, Kuranosuke, stay fabulous and that's good enough, that is an important skill. Regardless, Arthur's quick to sort the fire out, dashing a rock neatly against another, creating a spark and lighting the fire rather neatly. Having to do it every single evening when he was with Fee, and then again with the FE Army Trekking Across the World makes him pretty practiced at it.

Though he rubs the back of his head at that.]

Ha ha, I'm not so sure about that... [He hasn't been all that useful, especially sans magic.] But at least I'm used to camping out like this.

[Hmm.]

What do we have to cook, anyway?

I dunno, but step one of cooking out on the trail is building a campfire, yeah?

[how has no one in this wagon died yet... I will be astonished if they make it to week 3 without someone dying]

Well... has anyone caught any fresh game? I suppose we could make a vegetable stew if we can find some fresh produce too...

[Who's been hunting and gathering anyway...]

I think a couple of people were going out to hunt.

Maybe there's a rabbit somewhere nearby?

Probably not right around here, since we've been making so much noise. [BUT MAYBE???] We might be able to find something, though.

If I wanted meat back home, I'd just go to the supermarket. [More like he'd send someone to go to the supermarket...] Or go out to eat.

I've never had to cook it before. It's actually kind of... [...] Interesting.

But I suppose it is. We usually traded shifts on the march, but I don't mind trading off with Canute, since it seems like he knows what he's doing too.
